EVENT
Calling all journalists, scientists, and science communicators!
Science Media Centre (SMC) Malaysia is pleased to invite expressions of interest for the PANAS! Science Journalism Workshop, an interdisciplinary one-day event focused on the critical role of science advice in shaping public understanding and policy, with a special emphasis on climate change communication.
This initiative is organised in collaboration with Universiti Malaya and supported by the International Science Council Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific (ISC RFP-AP) and the International Network for Governmental Science Advice (INGSA)-Asia. It builds on the success of the PANAS! Climate Change Stories in Malaysia initiative, which supports evidence-based climate storytelling.
In today’s climate crisis, the need for clear, accurate, and impactful science communication is more urgent than ever. This workshop aims to connect journalists, scientists, and science communicators to explore how science advice can strengthen storytelling, shape public engagement, and support evidence-based policymaking.
Through a dynamic programme of talks, discussions, and practical sessions, participants will:
- Strengthen the accuracy and impact of science reporting.
- Foster informed decision-making at individual, community, and policy levels.
- Build public trust in science and media as reliable sources of information.
- Institutionalise science communication practices within media and research organisations.
- Enable journalists, scientists, and communicators to work more effectively together in informing evidence-based policymaking.
Whether you are a researcher, journalist, communicator, or policymaker, this workshop offers a valuable opportunity to learn, connect, and collaborate in strengthening Malaysia’s science communication ecosystem.
Admission is free, but spaces are limited!
We are selecting 30 participants for this exclusive workshop. To be considered, please submit your Expression of Interest by 2 May 2025.

This workshop is part of a broader regional effort by INGSA-Asia, with support from ISC RFP-AP, to promote science advice at national and institutional levels across Asia-Pacific. SMC Malaysia is honoured to be one of six recipients of the 2025 INGSA-Asia Seed Grants to organise initiatives that strengthen the use of science advice in public communications and policy.
Come be part of a growing movement to ensure that science stories — especially those about our changing climate — are grounded in evidence, resonate with real lives, and inspire action.
